I am a lover of Halloween costumes and dressing up. Today I am talking about Halloween Costumes from my youth. I love dressing up at Halloween. I also love making my own costume. My love for making costumes must have come from my mother. Though I may have worn the store bought hard plastic mask type costumes from the 70’s and 80’s, my mother made most of my costumes.

My favorite costume from my childhood would have to be my Holly Hobby costume.  Looking back, the worst Halloween costume choice would have to be my Clown costume. Apparently, I decided to piece that outfit together on my own. It’s scary, but not in a frightening way, more like in a cringey way. One year I thought it would be funny to wear a trash bag stuffed with newspaper, soup labels and such spilling out of the top and around my ankles….I also wore a sign that said “Litterly Trash”…yes, I was a bag of trash…and I thought it was clever, litter, trash. NOT l-i-t-e-r-a-l-l-y trash, but “L-i-t-t-e-r-l-l-y Trash”. I am almost certain I wore this to a 7 th grade Halloween party at the school.

In my 20’s, I have dressed up as Dolly Parton, Poison Ivy, Dead Prom Queen, Sandy from Grease, Devil (same costume from high school), and a Zombie Cheerleader, to name a few. Since being married, my hubby and I have been scarecrows, The Mad Hatter and White Rabbit, as well as other fun costumes.

I have since passed my love for making my Halloween costumes down to my daughter. It doesn’t matter if you make your own costume, buy or borrow one, it’s all about having fun on Halloween. I definitely believe the 1980’s Halloween was a completely different Halloween than today. I have great memories from those days. Share your costume memories from past Halloweens below!
