Thanksgiving Traditions

Thanksgiving traditions can be a fun way to celebrate with your family and friends. Traditions will vary from family to family, as well as from generation to generation. Some Thanksgiving traditions may center around having a certain menu each year and eating at the same house at the same time each year. Other traditions may be simple, like watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade on TV (or if you are lucky, in person). Whatever your tradition is, make it something fun and enjoyable.

My Past Family Traditions

Growing up, my past family traditions were having thanksgiving dinner at my MeMe and PawPaw’s house. My aunts, uncles, and cousins would all come. Everyone brought their favorite dishes and desserts. The Dallas Cowboy game was always on, and the men usually set at card tables and ate while watching the game. While in the dining room there was the dining table with the extra leaf set in place and folding chairs accompanied the dining chairs. Over to the side was another card table know as the “kids table”, which I sat at with my sisters and cousins. Some people were seated in the formal living room using the coffee table as their dining table. It’s suffice to say, every room was full of people eating. However, before the eating began my PawPaw would start off by having us all hold hands as he blessed the food.

New Traditions

I have fond memories of my past family Thanksgiving traditions, but we have added some new traditions over the years. Some years we have participated in the Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot . On occasion, my mom, sisters, and I have shopped during the madness of Black Friday shopping. Thanksgiving traditions these days consist of 3 Thanksgiving dinners. On Thursday we go to my parents for Thanksgiving lunch, then on Friday we eat at my in-laws and attend my husband’s Uncle Bud’s family Thanksgiving.  Though things have changed over the years, some things are still the same. The Cowboy game is always on, there is always enough food for a small army, and we always bless our dinner before we eat. No matter what your Thanksgiving traditions are, always find something to be thankful for and enjoy the time you have with your loved ones.

We wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving!
